Exit Sign - Search The World (1995)
Exit Sign - Search The World (1995)
By all accounts a very strange album, Exit Sign's debut is a mish mash of synthesizers, distorted guitars and late 1980s hip hop samples that is almost impossible to compare to anything heard since. Hailing from Manchester, United Kingdom, Exit Sign front man Fuzzy Dunlop described the album as "a festering bowl of porridge, a leftover hamburger or generally any kind of food that no one wants to eat." Although I've personally never found this quote to be helpful in understanding the album in any way, after listening to it, it seems that maybe its true meaning is best left for Fuzzy himself to figure out.

Patient Zero - Snafu (1961, Released 1995)
Patient Zero - Snafu (1961, Released 1995)
This album is a collection of shelved tracks and demos recorded by Willis Albright (aka Patient Zero) in late 1961, and serves as a great introduction to a fascinating albeit mysterious artist who was clearly passionate about free jazz as well as African instrumentation. Legend has it most of these songs were to be re-recorded with the house band at Bed Sheet Records but Albright's persistent drug problems caused the album to be shelved for almost 35 years before seeing a limited release on cassette by a small Colorado Springs based label.

The Scuzz Brothers - Scuzz Brothers EP (1982)
The Scuzz Brothers - Scuzz Brothers EP (1982)
In terms of the early 1980s Gary, Indiana hardcore scene, the Scuzz Brothers are largely overshadowed by their more famous (or perhaps infamous) contemporaries Chim LaRoo and the Borgs. However, the Scuzz Brothers second EP certainly holds up against anything Chim ever did and many would say is a better representation of the Gary scene than even the well known Borgs album Fuck Cincinnati. This is without a doubt among my personal favorites in the punk canon as well as being an especially political one.

Seijun Suzuki - Computer World (1988)
Seijun Suzuki - Computer World (1988)
During a hiatus from directing in the late 1980's Japanese director Seijun Suzuki (probably most famous for his film Tokyo Drifter) recorded an album of ambient electronic music influenced by what he called "the coming technological revolution." The album was pressed by a small Japanese imprint but copies numbered less than 500 and the record soon became a collector's item. Although it was recorded using little more than a Roland D-50, the frequent use of pentatonic scales gives it a distinct Japanese vibe.

2. Tokyo Sunset - 7:56
